Types of 24-Hour Home Care Services

There are two primary models of 24-hour home care: shift-service and live-in home care.

  • Shift-Service: This model involves a team of caregivers providing care in shifts throughout the day and night. It’s ideal for those who need consistent support but may not require a caregiver to live in their home.
  • Live-In Home Care: A live-in caregiver resides in the senior’s home, providing around-the-clock assistance and companionship. This option is particularly beneficial for seniors who live alone or require constant supervision. At Atlantic AllCare, we provide 24-hour home care to patients.

Benefits of 24-Hour Home Care

Choosing 24/7 home care can be a good decision for several reasons:

  • Aging in Place: Many seniors prefer to remain in their homes as they age. 24-hour home care makes this possible by providing the necessary support to maintain independence and a connection to their community.
  • Safety and Independence: Continuous supervision and assistance minimize the risk of accidents, ensuring seniors can live safely while maintaining their independence.
  • Family Support: Professional caregivers offer respite for family caregivers, allowing them to focus on their own well-being and responsibilities.

Benefits of Live-In Caregivers

Live-in caregivers offer numerous benefits that enhance the quality of life for seniors:

  • Personalized One-on-One Care: With a live-in caregiver, seniors receive undivided attention, ensuring their unique needs, preferences, and routines are met, promoting higher comfort and satisfaction.
  • Familiar Home Environment: Remaining in familiar surroundings can profoundly impact a senior’s well-being. Live-in care allows the elderly to maintain their connection to cherished memories, which is especially beneficial for those with cognitive impairments like dementia.
  • Consistent Companionship: Live-in caregivers provide companionship, reducing the risk of loneliness and isolation. They assist with daily tasks, engage in meaningful conversations and shared activities, and offer emotional support, fostering a strong bond and improving overall happiness.
  • Safety and Emergency Response: Live-in caregivers are trained to identify and mitigate potential safety hazards in the home, reducing the risk of accidents and falls. They also provide prompt assistance in emergencies, offering peace of mind for seniors and their families.
  • Maintaining Independence: As an alternative to nursing homes, live-in care empowers seniors to maintain independence and control over their daily lives. With a caregiver’s support, they can continue engaging in their favorite activities, hobbies, and social interactions for a more fulfilling and satisfying life.
  • Reduced Risk of Infection: Compared to nursing homes or assisted living facilities, live-in care minimizes exposure to infectious diseases, as the senior remains in their home with limited contact with others.
  • Cost-Effective Alternative to Nursing Homes: While the cost of live-in care may seem high initially, it is often more affordable than nursing homes, especially when considering the benefits of at-home care for seniors.

Choosing the Right 24-Hour Home Care

When selecting a 24-hour home care service, consider the following:

  • Caregiver Qualifications: Ensure caregivers are well-trained and qualified to provide the necessary care.
  • Reputation and Reviews: Look for agencies with a strong reputation and positive client testimonials.

Frequently Asked Questions About 24-Hour Home Care

For accurate pricing, please call Atlantic AllCare. The pricing discussed below is based on national averages.

The average cost of 24-hour in-home care varies significantly based on factors such as location, the level of care required, and the specific services provided. Nationally, the median cost for 24/7 in-home care is typically estimated as follows:

Hourly Rate: The median hourly cost for home care services is around $27 to $30 per hour, depending on the source and year of data136.

Monthly Cost: Based on these rates, the estimated monthly cost for 24/7 in-home care ranges from approximately $18,144 to $21,823 per month134.

These costs can vary widely depending on the state and local area. For example, states like California have higher costs due to higher hourly rates, while states like Georgia may offer more affordable options47.
In addition to the hourly or monthly costs, families should also consider other expenses such as medications, medical equipment, and supplies needed for the senior’s care.

It’s important to note that 24-hour home care often involves either shift-service or live-in home care, with live-in caregivers providing continuous support and companionship, which can be particularly beneficial for seniors requiring constant supervision.

For specific costs in your area, it’s advisable to consult with Atlantic AllCare to get a more accurate estimate based on your unique needs and circumstances.

Atlantic AllCare is not a Medicaid Provider. We accept long-term care insurance and private pay only. This FAQ is for reference and education.

Medicaid in Florida can cover 24-hour home care under certain conditions. Specifically, Medicaid will pay for 24/7 home care if there is a demonstrated medical necessity for continuous supervision, such as in cases where an individual requires a “nursing facility level of care” and needs assistance with two or more activities of daily living (ADLs) like bathing, personal hygiene, eating, and mobility.

However, Medicaid typically does not cover full-time, 24-hour in-home care unless it is part of a specialized program or waiver. Generally, Medicaid provides coverage for part-time home health services, such as skilled nursing and home health aide visits, which may not amount to full 24/7 care.

For those who require continuous care, Medicaid waiver programs, such as the Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) waivers, might offer more comprehensive coverage, allowing individuals to receive care at home instead of in a nursing facility. These programs often provide more flexibility in terms of the services covered and may include options for hiring caregivers to provide 24-hour care if medically necessary.

To qualify for Medicaid home health services in Florida, individuals must meet specific eligibility criteria, including being under the care of an attending physician and having a medical condition that substantially limits their ability to perform daily activities.
